Description
English: CHURCH CONTAINS MUMMIFIED REMAINS OF JAMES HEPBURN, EARL OF BOTHWELL, ERSTWHILE HUSBAND OF MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS. HE WAS IMPRISONED IN NEARBY DRAGSHOLM CASTLE IN 1573 AND DIED THERE 5 YEARS LATER. BOTHWELL HAD TO FLEE A SCOTTISH UPRISING AND MADE THE MISTAKE OF FLEEING TO BERGEN TO HIS "FRIEND" FREDERICK II. FREDERICK HELD HIM PRISONER IN THE HOPE OF BARTERING HIM OFF FOR THE RETURN OF THE SHETLAND AND ORKNEY ISLANDS
