The loveof gain has done much to secularise what once wassacred. JNIany good friends of Ober-Ammergau, itsplay and its people, think the time has come whenit should take end. From Ober-Ammergau to the Monastery ofEttal is a pleasant afternoons walk. We followthe banks of the clear-flowing Ammer, shadowedby mountains that come close to the roadway,among blooming meadows richly carpeted withwild flowers. Just before we reach Ettal, a roundtower of strong Roman workmanship has beentransformed into a dweUing. Here and there youfind traces of Roman roads and Roman rule. Inmany families you note striking Roman features,that prove that the Roman soldiers stationed atthe Kofel intermarried with the daughters of theland. FUSSEN The river Lech here leaves the mountains. Theroyal Castles Hohenschwangau and Neuschwansteinare close by at the edge of the hills.

Like them, the monks of Ettal brew good Bavarianbeer, and live a strenuous life, and instruct awhole regiment of young men who attend theircollege. It fills us with astonishment to find solarge a monastic establishment, and a church soornate and magnificent, in this lonely height in thehighlands of Bavaria. It is said that Ludwig ofBavaria in 1300 was once delivered from a greatdanger at Rome by a wonder-working Madonna,whose marble image was brought to him by an oldmonk. He vowed that he would build a shrine inhis own dominions for the Madonna as an expressionof his gratitude. Thrice on the summit of the Ettalhis horse stumbled, and refused to go farther.
