[edit]DescriptionEyemouth Disaster memorial (6949297293).jpg |
On 14th October 1881 a major storm hit this part of the coastline. The Eyemouth Disaster, as it came to be known, was a major disaster resulting in the death of 189 fishermen who were out in their boats. It was a catastrophe, decimating communities. Eyemouth was especially hit but in the village of Cove where I stood, 11 of the 21 fishermen who lived there died. In recent years a number of memorials have been erected in the various fishing villages affected. They're rather heartbreaking to look at, depicting the worried women and children of the village looking out to see wondering if their husband, their dad would make it home.
