Text Appearing Before Image:
dency of the plug is to fold or else enter endwise. Thismust be controlled or the pharynx will not be completelyplugged. The plug should enter the pharynx crosswise orhorizontally, and must be firmly pulled forward toward thenose so as to fill completely the posterior nasal opening andprevent further exit of blood. The pulling must be con-tinued until the plug is well jammed into the posterior naresand naso-pharynx and is out of the way of the movement ofthe uvula. The two strings coming through the nose fromthe plug are now separated and gauze is packed betweenthem. When the naris is moderately filled another plug isintroduced into the anterior naris, completely filling it, andthe two strings are tied tightly over the anterior plug. Asthe strings are tightened, the anterior plug will enter thenose and a second knot may be tied over the first one.The nose is now thoroughly plugged. The haemorrhage willcease at once. Failure to check bleeding generally results THE POSTNASAL TAMPON. 261
