Dept. of Agriculture. the uplifting of the Negro race depended largely on the acquiring ofgreater intelligence as a whole and the cultivation, individually andcollectively, of higher ideals of integrity, industry, perseverance,and morality. If, by individual effort and example, they coulddemonstrate to those among whom they lived that they could be-come capable and useful citizens and thereby add to the generalupbuilding of the community, right-thinking people, white as well ascolored, would give them moral and financial support. He realized,however, that it would be impossible to reach the masses of his racedirectly through schools, even such as his own, and, therefore, wasearnestly seeking other methods of extending their influence. Thedemonstration idea impressed him as the most feasible means yet

There are special conditions which must be met in carrying onwork of this kind among Negroes in many localities. It is veryimportant that the Negro agents not only have a knowledge of thework to be done but also have an understanding of the relationshipof the races in their respective communities. The employment ofNegro agents can not be pushed more rapidly than public sentimentcan be educated to appreciate and receive them. Owing to such-circumstances, the progress of extension work among Negroes hasbeen slow in some sections, and there are still places with a large Extension Work Among Negroes, 1920.
