f the demonstrationagents. They are building better homes, acquiring good live stock,and starting orchards, pastures, and gardens. There is a decidedinclination to secure better schools, churches, and roads, all of whichleads to the conclusion that the efforts and money being spent arebringing substantial returns. 12 Department Circular 190, U. S. Dept. of Agriculture. FARM DEMONSTRATION WORK. The 157 men agents reporting from the 15 States list 500 demon-strators, with 31,000 acres; and 39,784 cooperators, with 138,609acres of corn, yielding nearly twice as much per acre as the corn onadjoining farms which had been worked under ordinary methods;6,778 of these farmers selected seed corn for next years planting. There were listed 1,917 demonstrators in cotton (fig. 3), with13,030 acres, and 15,444 cooperators, with 39,441 acres, showing anaverage yield of 500 pounds more seed cotton per acre than wasobtained on the surrounding farms; 3,378 cotton farmers selectedseed for the next year.

More than 50 per cent of the Negrofarmers listed report having enough grain and forage to run theirfarms, which is a remarkable showing as compared with the situationa few years ago. The growing of forage and hay crops among theNegro farmers is a new departure with many of them. The im-portance and value of such crops, not only for the feed, but soilimprovement, has been shown. The Negro agents assisted in improving and giving attention to4,595 orchards, with a total of 226,779 trees; 597 new orchards wereset out under the instruction of agents; and 2,248 farmers were shownhow to prune and 1,546 how. to spray.
