Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The green apparatus in the foreground is Extended Duration Orbiter (EDO) module, and is the only one in existence today. To enable long-duration missions up to 28 days, two examples of this module were built to house extra supplies; Columbia and Endeavour were the orbiters that received the EDO modules.

In case of Endeavour, the EDO module was removed once the International Space Station was operational; Endeavour instead received an interface that allowed it to hook up to the International Space Station and use its solar panel-generated electricity to run various systems while docked. Discovery also received the station interface. Atlantis received neither the EDO module nor the interface, limiting its long-duration ability. Columbia was normally too heavy for International Space Station visits so it kept its EDO module - which was destroyed when Columbia broke up during re-entry in 2003.

This EDO module is in Southern California, rather than in Florida, because the orbiters were ferried back to their final assembly site in Palmdale for heavy overhauls, and Endeavour had its EDO module removed during one such overhaul.
