English: This image depicts a classic experiment. A small amount of methanol is poured into a large polycarbonate water bottle. After letting the methanol to evaporate a burning splint is held at the mouth of the bottle. This results in an explosion since the bottle is now filled with a combustible vapour (namely methanol) and air. Methanol produces a blue flame but we dissolved a bit of boric acid in our sample which resulted in a green flame. (Boric acid forms an ester with methanol which turns the flame into green.) This experiment is an excellent and fun way to teach the differences between a simple combustion and an explosion. The picture was taken in a collaboration with my colleague, Ildikó Radnai. Magyar: A képen egy klasszikus kísérletet örökítettünk meg. Egy irodai vizespalackba egy kevés metanolt töltöttünk, majd hagytuk elpárologni a folyadékot. Ezután égő gyújtópálcát tartottunk a palack szájához. Ez egy robbanást eredményezett, hiszen a palack éghető anyag gőzeit (a metanolét) és levegőt tartalmazott. A metanol kék lánggal ég, de a mi mintánk kevés bórsavat is tartalmazott. (A bórsav észtert képez a metanollal, amely zöldre festi a lángot.) Ez a kísérlet egyszerre kiváló és szórakoztató módja annak bemutatására, hogy mi a különbség az egyszerű égés és a robbanás között. A képet Radnai Ildikó kollégámmal közösen készítettük.
