[edit]DescriptionExplorer Scouts (Post 156, Clearfield Utah) with signal mirrors at the peak of Mt. Timpanogos, 1964.jpg |
English: Operation On-Target Explorer Scouts (Post 156, Clearfield Utah) with signal mirrors at the peak of Mt. Timpanogos, 1964. The scout at center is wearing a military issue 3"x5" "Mirror, Mark 3, emergency signaling" with retroreflective mesh aimer. Likely a MIL-M-18371B version or earlier. The double-sided large improvised signal mirrors were patterned after the ESM/1 emergency signal mirror that Glannin Cloward carried as a B-25 pilot in WWII. Grafitti covered 'shack' in the background was erected at the peak of Mt Timpanogos by the U.S. Geological Survey. In addition to providing shelter for hikers it is used to measure movement of the mountain.
