Pulse Pressure (Pulse Tuning):
Pulse pressure, also known as pulse tuning, is a method used in two-stroke engines to optimize power delivery throughout the RPM range. In a two-stroke engine, the power band, or the range where the engine produces its maximum power, is heavily influenced by the timing of the transfer ports (also known as transports). To maximize top-end power, the exhaust system is designed with components that create a pulse or pressure wave. As exhaust gases exit the cylinder and travel through the exhaust system, they encounter specific shapes and cones that cause the gases to diffuse and create a negative pressure. This negative pressure helps pull the remaining exhaust gases out of the cylinder, improving the scavenging process. At the same time, as the pressure wave travels back through the exhaust system, it can push a portion of the incoming air-fuel mixture back into the cylinder, enhancing low-end and mid-range power. This balance between efficient scavenging and improving the lower RPM power band is the essence of pulse tuning in two-stroke engines.
