BUDDHA IN DHARMACHAKRA BASALT STONE (10TH CENT. AD.) NALANDA ASI. NM. 00011

Buddha is seated on a lotus placed on a rectangular high triratha pedestal marked with two lions on two corners. He is in the dharmachakramudra (pose of turning the wheel of law) with his two hands (damaged). The figure is depicted with long earlobes, drapery falling in folds in whole of the body, ridge going round the neck and hair arranged in snail-shaped curls. The face is mutilated, but the mark of urna is visible. He is flanked by Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in right and Maitreya in his left. The elaborate oval stele designed with stylized flames of fire where two flying Gandharvas carrying garlands are on either side of the flames. The pedestal bears the chakra flanked by the two dear motif symbolizing the scene of the delivery of the First Sermon at Sarnath. There are inscriptions recording names of Sariputra, Maulgalayana, Avalokiteshwara and Maitreya. The image is gifted to this museum in 1949.
