Description
English: Exeter St David's Station, with Down WR and Up SR expresses.
View northwards, towards Taunton, Bristol and London on the ex-GWR main line, towards Ilfracombe, Padstow and Plymouth on the ex-L&SWR main lines. Ex-GW 'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4920 'Dumbleton Hall' (built 3/29, withdrawn 12/65) is allowed through on the 09.40 Paddington - Paignton Summer Saturday express. SR trains used the centre island platform here and SR 'West Country' 4-6-2 No. 34023 'Blackmoor Vale' (built 2/46, withdrawn 7/67) waits - behind the train-spotters - to cross the Down WR line and attack the 1-in-36 bank up to Exeter Central with the 11.00 from Padstow (a part of the 'Atlantic Coast Expres'), where a 'Merchant Navy' 4-6-2 will take over for London Waterloo (arr. 15.40). Coincidentally, both these locomotives have survived in preservation; the 'Hall' on the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh, the 'West Country' on the Bluebell Railway
