Summary
[edit]DescriptionExceptional folds during the Girls into Geoscience inaugural Irish Fieldtrip.jpg |
English: Taken at the first ever Irish fieldtrip for the Girls into Geoscience event at Loughshinny, Dublin on November 2nd 2019. The field trip attendees (right side of image) can be seen looking at world class folding in sedimentary rocks of Carboniferous ages (360 - 299 million years ago). These rocks were once laid down flat and then during a mountain building event known as the Variscan orogeny, they were folded into the shapes you see here.
Girls into Geoscience is a programme (started in the UK) aimed at introducing female school and university students to Earth Sciences. It has been running in Ireland since 2017. The 2019 event was hosted through UCD in collaboration with Geological Survey Ireland (GSI), DIAS, TCD, DCU, Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) and the Irish Association for Women in Geosciences (IAWG). |
