This School, recently founded by the Princess of Schleswig-Holstein andother noble ladies, under the patronage of the Queen, has for its object therevival of that famous embroidery and other work of the needle for which thewomen of England were so famous three centuries ago. It will be remem-bered that at that time England had the reputation of making the finestecclesiastical vestments in the world. But with the decay of the Church camea corresponding decadence in the demand for embroidery, and consequently theart fell into disuse. Chiefly owing to the encouragement now given to it bythe Royal School is this beautiful branch of womans work being revived. TheSchool employ the very first artists and designers of England to furnish themwith designs, and in the display sent to this country are patterns by such well-known men as Morris and Crane and Pollen. Thematerial is a heavy red Utrecht velvet, on which the design of pines and 66 THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, 1876. flowers is worked in embossed gold; the scroll-work and foliated patterns beingdone in applique with different-colored velvets. The effect of the whole isgorgeous in the extreme, making this set, perhaps, the most striking in thecollection. People who think of glass merely as a brittle, transparent substance shouldvisit the Austrian exhibit, and especially the display of Lobmeyr, of Bohemia,to be made aware of its malleability, its varied uses, and a material capableof being turned into the most beautiful forms. It is said that even at Viennathe display of crystal was not so fine as that made here. In Lobmeyrs col-lection are superb pieces of engraved crystal, various kinds of Bohemian wareand bone-glass.
