Description
English: Ex-Southampton open topper, preserved and operating at the tramway museum in Crich, Derbyshire, UK (today, the National Tramway Museum). The Southampton tram system had one peculiarity in that in the centre trams had to pass through the very constricted Bargate. This goes some way to explaining why some open-top cars had been retained late enough for preservation. These trams bore a notice stating that 'When the car is passing through the Bargate, passengers must remain seated and must not touch the wire'. It did not state that the penalty for infringing the last bit would be instant death.
