That Mr. Shimer held the respect and confidence of his fellow-citizens was attested by the fact that .fee defeated for the chief magistracy one of the most popular Democrats in the city, who, in turn, succeeded Mayor Shimer. His administration was one of the best the city ever had. It was conducted strictly on business principles and Mr. Shimer filled the office without fear or favor. It was during that period of the city's history when local capitalists realized the necessity of establishing new industries that Mr. Shimer was mayor, and no one worked more faithfully to Induce foreign manufacturers to locate here than did Mayor Shimer. The later years of Mr. Shimer's life were spent In retirement from business cares, but he was to the end the came urbane, polished gentleman, with a kindly word and greeting for every one rich or poor, high or low alike.
