Title |
ewer foot (base) |
||
Description |
English: Cast leaded bronze foot of a jug or ewer in the form of a knight's armoured boot. The foot is oval in plan and rectangular in section with two sets of oblique lines along the upper face, which make it look like it is suited in armour. There is a casting flaw in the base of the foot which has since been rubbed over during use to create a rectangular aperture with a rounded border (Roderick Butler pers comm).
Lewis, Brownsword and Pitt (1987), in their paper on Medieval Bronze Tripod Ewers from Wales, in Medieval Archaeology Vol.XXXI, illustrate similar examples on page 85, Fig.2, Nos.2-5, which are dated to the 14th or early 15th century.
Margeson (1993) illustrates two similar examples on page 92, Fig.59, Nos.568 & 569, which are dated to c.1507 and c.1650-1750, respectively.
Ottaway and Rogers (2002) illustrate a similar example on page 2810, Fig.1394, No.14193, which is dated from the mid 15th century to the early 17th century. |
