WARNING— The best of seed is necessary for use on all
grounds devoted to sport. Years of experience have shown us
that the best results are obtained in the A MERICA N CLIMA TE,
and under AMERICAN CONDITIONS by sowing chiefly
AMERICAN-GROWN SEEDS.
We deal only in the highest grades and before offering this seed
to our customers for sale, it is thoroughly recleaned by the most modern
seed-cleaning machinery in America. These are not ordinary fanning
mills, but machines with an even and strong air suction — equal at all
points — which is quite a different thing from a blast. By this process
we are enabled to eliminate the rubbish, and light, imperfect seeds,
leaving only sound, perfect seeds.
Henderson's "Athletic
Field Grass Seed Mixture
For BASEBALL POLO and CRICKET
GROUNDS Etc., Etc.
Is a special blend of deep-rooting, fine-leaved, turf-forming Grasses, especially
suited for Baseball Grounds, Polo Grounds, Cricket Grounds, etc. This mixture
forms a thick, strong, enduring turf that will stand any amount of hard usage
without showing wear and tear. It grows quickly, and if soil and conditions
are at all favorable with attention to rolling and mowing, should be ready for
hard use in eight weeks from sowing.
The refreshing green and the close turf — 'which have attracted the attention
of hundreds of thousands of patrons of the principal Baseball Parks and Polo
Grounds of the country — 'Were produced by this special mixture of The Hender-
son Grass Seed. Among others we may mention the Polo Grounds at
Meadowbrook, where the famous international match was played last June,
Newport, Lakewood, Rockaway Hunt, Saratoga, also some of the leading Base-
ball Parks in the country including the Polo Grounds in New York, Ebbets
Field and Washington Park in Brooklyn. (See cut.)
Sow 100 to 150 lbs. per acre; according to soil conditions.
Price, delivered free in the U. S., per lb., 30c. ; per 100 lbs., $25.00.
SCENE
AT THE
INTERNATIONAL
POLO GAME
At Meadowbrook, L.
June 1 7th. 1914
The International Polo Games
At Meadowbrook, L. I., June 13th and 17th, 1914, were played upon turf produced with
The Henderson "Athletic Field" Grass Seed Mixture
Its rich dark velvety-green was the subject of admiring comment by thousands.
Our illustration above is from photos taken at Meadowbrook on the occasion
of the famous international match between picked teams representing America
and England. The Polo Field and the various lawns at Meadowbrook were
originally laid down with The Henderson "Athletic Field" Grass Seed Mixture
and have been renovated from time to time with the same mixture. The
superintendent h?s thus been able to maintain at all times a close, compact
turf of dark emerald-green (see his testimonial printed below) which has aroused
the admiration of thousands. The oblong picture is a view of the grounds
being prepared for the game by mowing the Grass with a power mower, which
at the same time rolls and smooths the surface. The Grass cuttings were removed
later by a small army of men with rakes, leaving a perfectly clean turf. In the
circle is a photo of an incident at the opening of the second game, showing a
group of the principal players in action.
THE NEW YORK TIMES of June 17th, 1914, describing the contest and
the surroundings, says in part, "The crowd was larger than on the first day, and
sat tier upon tier around the rolled field which looked for all the world like a
great strip of green velvet."
A 14-YEAK TEST PROVES ITS VALUE
"Our Polo Grounds and lawns at Meadowbrook were laid down about 14 years ago
with the special mixture of THE HENDERSON "A THLETIC FIELD" GRASS
SEED MIXTURE^and we have renovated them from time to time with the same
mixture. We would not use any other brand. The condition of these grounds at all
seasons of the year is the best possible testimonial to the value of your seed.
"For forming a springy, yet compact turf, that will withstand the hard usage
incidental to the game of polo, it is all that can be desired."
JAMES McCROSSAN, Superintendent, Meadowbrook Club, L. I.
YOUR GRASS SEED MADE OUR CRICKET COURSE FAMOUS
"1 have had from you at different times many bushels of 'Henderson's' Special
Grass Seed Mixture for use on Cricket Grounds and it has always given excellent
satisfaction. In Lawrence we used it on the Merrimack Cricket Club Grounds,
and the course had a good name all over the State. Since I have been connected
with the Mohair Cricket Club, in Lowell, we have used the same seed with the same
result, that our wicket is considered the best in the State."
JOS. W. HARRISON. Lowell. Mass.
