EVERYTHING FOIR TIE GA1DEM = Flower Seeds*
SENSATIONAL FLOWER SEED NOVELTIES
Henderson's New Red Sunflowers
(SOME TYPES SHOWN IN COLOKS ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE)
Gorgeous Floral Creations Produced by Breeding
Garden Sunflowers with the Only Plant of a Wild Red Sunflower Ever Discovered
Thus Producing this Remarkable New Race of Wonderful Beauty, Variety and Interest
In 1910 the wife of a professor of biology in the West discovered in this land
of wild Sunflowers, among the myriads of plants bearing yellow Sunflowers, one
single and only plant that bore RED flowers. It was fortunate that this rare
find fell into such knowing and scientific hands, for all Sunflowers are self sterile,
that is, none will produce seed with its own pollen, to be productive it must be
fertilized with pollen from another plant and there being no other red flowering
plant to breed with the new discovery, of necessity — -to seed — it had to be
pollenized with a yellow variety.
The professor carefully removed the wild red Sunflower plant to his garden,
and being acquainted with the Mendelian laws of breeding for definite results
— 'discovered and expounded by Gregor Mendel, a Moravian monk — the red
Sunflower was therefore hybridized with yellow garden types and vice versa,
the resultant new race being a variety of hybrids in some of which the red blood
dominates, in others the yellow. As it requires three generations to "fix" the
chosen individual types — that is breed plants that will reproduce "true" from
seed, we therefore concluded not to wait longer for any special "fixed" types,
but to offer this season the seed of the various hybrid crosses in mixtures believing
that our patrons will enjoy — -as we do — -pleasurable interest in watching the
development of new and varied forms and colorings. HENDERSON'S NEW
RED SUNFLOWERS are splendid garden annuals, quick and robust in growth,
very showy in the border — -and the long-stemmed flowers when cut and vased
are most effective and last long in water appearing especially well by artificial
light. Plants may produce all yellow flowers.
HENDERSON'S NEW RED SUNFLOWERS are as easily grown from seed
as any other annual Sunflower — they thrive in almost any soil in a sunny position.
The seed may be sown in the open ground when warm enough — -or it may be
started in the house or hot bed. The plants commence flowering in about 8
weeks from seed sowing, and should stand not nearer than 3 feet apart for best
development.
HENDERSON'S
New Red Sunflower
(SHOWN IN COLOKS ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE)
This type we introduced last year and it has given great satisfaction to all
who grew it. One lady writes: "Your new red Sunflowers were simply grand
and attracted a great deal of attention. " Another customer writes: "I received
a blue ribbon at our local flower show for my red Sunflowers grown from your
seed." Another says: "From a package of your red Sunflower seeds we pro-
duced a good percentage of nearly all red flowers, others with red circles, some
doubled with an extra row of petals, but the most surprising of the lot was one
plant that bore very nearly pure white flowers; they were creamy when opening,
but turned white when fully developed; it was most conspicuous and striking;
the petals were long, the center small, and it appeared like a mammoth Daisy."
The plants of Henderson's "Red and Gold" Sunflower grow strong and sturdy
to a height of 7 to 9 feet — -according to the richness of the soil and the sunny
warmth of location — producing several large flowers of refined form, the rays
wide and long, the disc or center small. The coloring varies from golden-yellow
splashed with red to nearly all xed, but the
great majority will be Gaillardia colored —
that is a wide or narrow zone of red sur-
rounds the purplish-black center, the ends or
tips of the petals being of a rich golden-yel-
low color; this combination is very rich and
effective. Of course a small proportion of
the plants may produce all yellow flowers,
but even these will be showy and desirable.

HENDERSON'S NEW
Wine and Primrose Sunflower
(SHOWN IN COLORS ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE)
This new type has been produced by crossing a red Sunflower on the cream or
primrose colored garden variety. The resultant hybrid plants are of distinctive
branching growth — -almost candelabra-like, attaining a height of about 5 feet.
The numerous side branches each terminate with a Sunflower 4 to 5 inches across,
of light primrose or cream-yellow, broadly zoned around the disc with wine-red.
As a plant carries from 20 to 30 of these beautifully colored flowers, the glorious
decorative effect may be imagined. (See cut.) PRICE, PER PACKET, 25c;
PER 1,000 SEEDS, SI. 00.
HENDERSON'S NEW
I\ed Lilliput Sunflower
(SHOWN IN COLOFkS ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE)
This small-flowering dwarf bush Sunflower — -while perhaps the least desirable
of Henderson's trio of red Sunflowers — -is most unique and novel. The plants
form compact bushes 2 to 3 feet in height and of about the same diameter.
The hundreds of little branches carry each a miniature Sunflower 2)^ to 3 inches
across, colored entirely opposite to its larger growing relatives — -the flowers of
the Red Lilliput being zoned with yellow around the dark center, the ends of
the petals being tipped with either claret or maroon-red. There is of course the
expected variation in coloring on different plants — ■ some producing flowers
in which the red predominates, and others with flowers almost or quite golden-
yellow. The flowers are produced freely all over the plant and in continuous
succession until killed by frost. (See cut.) PRICE, PER PACKET, 20c.
