double.
These popular flowers are easily grown, and are so highly fra-
grant and of such great beauty, and have so many good qualities,
that they deserve a place in every garden. They should be given
good rich soil to grow in, and will amply reward good treatment with
remarkably large pyramids of bloom ; the flowers represent a great
diversity of brilfiant color. (See cut.)

BEAUTY OR "GIANT NICE" STOCKS
"Beauty" Stocks are also known as Large Early Dresden Stocks, Giant
Nice Stocks, Cut-and-Come-Again Stocks, Continuity Stocks, etc.
The plants are of fine symmetrical habit, bushy, and in flower stand about l.-£
to 2 feet in height. The numerous side branches each carry a tall strong spike
well furnished with unusually large and very double deliciously clove-scented
flowers. Among the merits of "Beauty" Stocks is their adaptability to many
cultural conditions and their decorative effectiveness, whether grown in flower
beds, garden borders or as potted specimens. They do not flower as quickly from
seed sowing as Ten-week Stocks, the "Beauties" requiring from 12 to 15 weeks,
but after they commemce blooming their long continued profusion is phenomenal.
Seeds started early in the spring and the seedlings transplanted in the garden in
May will begin flowering in July and continue to bloom until frozen. Late sown
plants if carefully lifted and potted in the fall will continue to flower beautifully
in window garden or conservatory during the winter, though when grown espe-
cially for winter flowering — for which "Beauty" Stocks are peculiarly adapt-
able^ — it is better to sow the seeds in Julyor August. As cut flowers "Beauty"
Stocks are unsurpassable, their splendid trusses of bloom lend themselves to
table and other floral decorations. The fragrant flowers are of lasting substance
and their refined colorings light up well under artificial light. (See cut.)

Public domain

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
