Commandé par Anne de Chambré, trésorier des Guerres. Le tableau a été décrit par Guillet de Saint-Georges dans une conférence prononcée à l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1690 : « M. de Chambray, trésorier des Guerres, qui demeurait dans la rue de Cléry, lui fit faire [à Le Sueur] dans un tableau les portraits de plusieurs de ses amis, chacun d’eux représenté avec les symboles de ses inclinations particulières ou de sa profession. De sorte que l’un d’entre eux, qui avait été enseigne d’une compagnie d’infanterie, arborait un drapeau, un autre qui excellait à jouer du luth tenait cet instrument à la main, et M. Le Sueur, qui était du nombre des amis, fut obligé de s’y peindre lui-même, tenant un pinceau à la main pour représenter un génie des Beaux-Arts qu’on voit représenté dans le tableau » (cf. Guillet de Saint-Georges, 1690). Le tableau a été acquis pour Louis XVI comme une oeuvre de Simon Vouet et il a été longtemps présenté au

Louvre comme tel. Il a été rendu à Le Sueur dans le catalogue des peintures du Louvre de Gaston Brière en 1924. Le tableau a été restauré en support (reprise du rentoilage) par Jean-Pascal Viala et en couche picturale par Patricia Vergez entre 2010 et 2012.
