likely thatsome jeweller, who could make these things, hap-pened to be at the Court of the King, and wasspecially directed to afford a specimen of his craft,and this would be a reason for recording it on thesetting. This too would accord with the character ofthe King, who was interested in crafts. The work-manship of the jewel is not very good, and it is athing that any one could make wTith gold, somecoloured glass, and a few handfuls of charcoal. On the other hand, however, even if the jewelwere made for King Alfred, this by no means provesthat it is of English manufacture, for he may havehad it executed on one of his journeys to Rome, andmounted on his return. And some distinguished archaeologists are ofopinion that the jewel shows signs of being of Celticmanufacture, possibly Irish. A very interesting example of early Carlovingiansecular ornament is to be found in the collection ofMajor Freiherr v. Heyle at Darmstadt.
