ony in his desert,had not yet been banished from religious composi-tions. In these earlier painted enamels of the NardonPenicaud period the backs are of various colours,and the copper is usually stamped with the lettersL. P. and a crown. Sometimes cracks are seen halfhealed up by the heat of subsequent firing. Suchcracks as these indicate that the enameller has usedglasses of varying compositions—they never occurwhen the material is of uniform composition. The mode of framing these enamels is alsopeculiar. They are enclosed in brass mouldedframes, which have obviously been cast, and thenbrazed together at the corners. At intervals verypretty little ornaments are riveted on, consisting ofa twisted stalk, with a leaf at each end. The in-spiration of these is distinctly Gothic—the effectcharming. The whole has been thickly gilt by themercurial process. The frames are usually put incovers of wood, painted red, sometimes with littlediaper patterns on them. Generally they are in the 116
