PAINTED ENAMELS triptych form, which could be shut up, so as toserve for portable altars for private devotion, inrooms otherwise devoted to secular purposes. In many cases the wood covers were clothedwith parchment, painted with various designs. One cannot perhaps call this great work. It hadsomewhat the air of work turned out in quantity. And yet when seen in museums there is somethingvery fascinating about it—perhaps for the reasonthat it has come down to us almost as fresh as theday it was made, and has not that ruined appearancethat attends so much of what survives of the workof the fifteenth century. In the Louvre there are four enamels attributedto Nardon—the Crucifixion, a Pieta, and two of theCoronation of the Virgin. The remaining artistsof the Penicaud family were related, but it is verydifficult to know in what degree. The more cele-brated are as follows :— John Penicaud I (senior).John Penicaud II (junior).John Penicaud III.Peter Penicaud. There are two other artists
