e. — In the tropical forest there is a great varietyof tree-dwelling animals, among which are many insects and.beautiful birds. Among the larger animals may be mentionedthe fruit-eating monkey, the fierce jaguar (Fig. 81), which preysupon other animals, and the sloth (Fig. 81), a creature whicheven sleeps suspended, back downward, from the branches ofthe trees. There are also many reptiles, including serpentsand the iguana (Fig. 81), a tree lizard often several feet inlength. Some of the serpents are small and poisonous; others,like the boa constrictor (Fig. 81), are large and powerfulenough to crush a deer in their coils. The boa, coiled amongthe trees awaiting its prey, resembles a vine. The beautiful butterflies and ants are most noticeable amongthe insects. Some of the ants live in the ground, others indecayed vegetation, and many of them are terrible pests.Among the most interesting insects are the termites, commonlycalled white ants, which live in colonies, and build houses of

One of the most interesting of theseis the ant-eater (Fig. 81), whose long claws are adapted todigging the ants from their earthy or woody dwelling places,while its sharp-pointed snout and long tongue aid it in findingand devouring its food. Besides these animals there is the tapir (Fig. 81), five or sixfeet in length, which wanders about at night, feeding along thewatercourses ; and the armadillo (Fig. 81), a burrowing ani-mal protected by an armor. When attacked by an enemy, thearmadillo rolls itself into a ball, enclosing its soft under parts.In the river waters and swamps are fishes, turtles, and alliga-tors (Fig. 81). The turtle eggs and fish are among the princi-pal foods for the forest Indians. Here also is found themanatee (Fig. 81), or sea cow, a mammal that has becomeadapted to life in the water.
