An unexpected contortion of a Satellite Moth I was photographing a Satellite moth (Eupsilia transversa) on the 16th of October which I had trapped from the previous night when, after I had finished photographing it I went to go and pick it up when it suddenly and unexpectedly contorted itself into this unusual posture from what I can only assume is an extreme form of defensive posture? I wish I had recorded it on film but I never expected it to happen. It stayed like this for a few minutes and then went back to it’s normal resting position and then quickly warmed up and flew off. From my experience of finding deceased moths over the years, especially examples studied in a Bat hide during trapping sessions at Parndon Wood, Harlow during the years 2009-2011, I can recall seeing remnants of moths looking exactly like this particular stance, with the hindwings and the abdomen made to look ’missing’ and presumably mimicking a dead moth. I felt very privileged to observe it in this strange guise. Ben Sale |
