Description |
English: Euphémie Vauthier was born on 3 May 1829 in Montignac in the Dordogne department and she was married Eugène Garcin (1830-1909), writer and journalist, on 11 May 1861 in Paris in the 9th arrondissement. Euphémie Vauthier died on 4 December 1900 in Antony, today in the department of Hauts-de-Seine. She is the director and teacher of an institution and boarding school for young girls in Paris, professor of history at the Higher School for Young Girls of the City of Paris, writer, journalist and lecturer. She is also the younger sister of Louis-Léger Vauthier (1815-1901), a French engineer and politician. Euphémie Vauthier-Garcin was the first woman brought before the Court of Assizes in 1872 for a political offense committed through the press, following the publication of an article on the execution of Louis Rossel in 1871 and the defense of the victims of Versailles repression during the Paris Commune. She was prosecuted for contempt of the French National Assembly. The writer Victor Hugo supports Euphémie Vauthier in her political fight and she will be acquitted.
