Summary
[edit]DescriptionEumerus funeralis-strigatus (male) - Flickr - S. Rae (4).jpg |
Glenwhan, Galloway, Scotland. Another view of this Bulb-fly appropriately perched on a bulb label. Firstly its general form and behaviour suggested a Eumerus species of which there are four species recorded in Britain. E. sabulonum can be discounted as it has a red abdomen. E. ornatus is a much longer insect than this which leaves E. strigatus and E. funeralis. These last two differ in the pattern of ventral hairs on the hind femur as seen from the side; strigatus has long hairs throughout while in funeralis the hairs nearer the base of the femur are much shorter. This appears to be shown on the photograph above (see note) suggesting this is a male E. funeralis. Unfortunately the detail is not clear enough to be certain. |
