Eugene Semple was born in Bogota, Colombia, on June 12, 1840, to James Semple (1798-1866). In 1864, Eugene Semple moved to Portland, Oregon, where he was editor of the Oregon Herald and practiced law, and the state printer for Oregon. In 1870, he married Ruth Lownsdale (1954-1883) and moved to Washington Territory. He was appointed Governor of Washington Territory in 1887. Father of Adria Maud Semple Moale Langdon, Zoe Agnes Semple, Mary Ethel Semple Swanstrom, and Eugene Lownsdale Semple.
