embrandt sont venus mystérieu-sement éclore à la surface de Carrière, tantôt presque seuls,tantôt confondus, puis peu à peu voilés comme une sourcesouterraine, reculant dans le souvenir pour laisser sa per-sonnalité grandissante croître de plus en plus et les recou-vrir de son ombre. Si lon sen rapporte à ses plus anciennes esquissesdatelier (i), petites toiles sombres, sujets et tons décole,mais étrangement larges, aisés, comme aérés, guerriers nus,prophètes drapés, femmes suppliantes, on saperçoit quecest Michel-Ange qui limpressionna surtout à cette époque.Ce sont des attitudes nobles, un peu forcées, un peu dra-matisées, des torses herculéens, des raccourcis puissants quifont saillir les muscles, des fonds,des ciels de tragédie. Cestoiles ne sont pas sans force. La couleur, bien quun peu saleest sobre, relevée ça et là de bleus, de gris, de roses qui fontpressentir un vrai peintre, le modelé est volontaire, le dessin (i) Collection Ernest Carrière.3°
