Il faisait aussi des petitstableaux quon vendait de droite et de gauche chez lesvoisins, les amis, les relations commerciales du père. AlEcole, il travaillait avec conscience, très attentif auxleçons du professeur. Très peu de traces en lui de cetteindépendance intransigeante propre à la plupart des grandsartistes de son siècle, de lEcole de Barbizon aux Impres-sionnistes en passant par Daumier, Courbet et Manet.Cétait un garçon très fier, très droit, très noble, et duneardente volonté, ainsi quen témoigne le premier portraitde lui qui nous soit parvenu, mais très modeste, et mêmeun peu candide.
