English: An impoverished woman of "proper" Jewish background, Esther Solomon (1824-1911) was sent to New Zealand in fall 1841 by the Jewish charities in London in order to marry Benjamin Levy, who had emigrated in 1839 with his brother, Solomon. She and Benjamin were married in the 2nd known Jewish wedding in New Zealand, the first in Wellington, and the only known one whose marriage certificate as well as marriage contract survive from the Colonial era in New Zealand. |
