EPIGRAFÍA FUNERARIA Sobre os enterramentos adoitaba erixirse unha estela, formada case sempre por un monolito de dimensión variables rematado en arco ou en frontón.

Sobre a súa cara frontal, moi a miúdo xunto con deseños de forte simbolismo relacionados co mundo de ultratumba, e ás veces acompañada por unha imaxe de mellor ou peor factura do propio defunto, aparece a inscrición.

Nela, tras unha advocación ás divindades funerarias romanas (D.M.S.: Dis Manibus sacrum: consarado ós deuses Manes), adoita mencionarse o nome do defunto, a súa idade, a identidade do dedicante e outros datos variados ata concluír as máis das veces coa fórmula S. T. T. L (Sit tibi terra levis: que a terra che sexa leve).

As inscricións funerarias aportan información de gran valor sobre, por exemplo, a onomástica da época e a esperanza de vida.
