Conde de Vímara Peres, natural da Galiza, tomou em 868 Portugal aos Mouros e teria sido morto, no ano de 873, na localidade de Guimarães, cujo nome derivou de VIMARANIS, designação anterior desta povoação. Vímara Peres iniciou a época do domínio cristão definitivo da região do Porto que foi sempre parte integrante do reino de Portugal. Vímara Peres deslocara-se a Guimarães, quando ocorreu a sua morte, porque o Rei Astur-Leonês Afonso III, aí entendeu reunir a cúria régia para tratar do repovoamento do território conquistado.
