Escritor português, natural do Cartaxo. Fez os seus estudos liceais em Santarém e Lisboa. Depois de uma breve passagem pela escola Politécnica, acabou por se formar em Medicina pela Universidade de Lisboa. Estreou-se nas letras com as peças “O Senhor Barão”(1887), que não obteve grande acolhimento, e com o drama histórico Leonor Teles (1889) , peça escrita em versos alexandrinos e com a qual alcançou o seu primeiro êxito. Mais tarde, transformou a peça num romance histórico de três volumes, também intitulado Leonor Teles (1904-1905), onde romanceou a vida da célebre figura histórica. Durante a frequência do último ano de curso publicou o livro de poemas Meridionais (1882). Três anos mais tarde, provocou um escândalo, com repercussões na imprensa, ao dar a conhecer a sua comédia em cinco actos A Pérola (1885). Considerada imoral, esta peça abordava o tema da prostituição e os ambientes boémios frequentados pelos estudantes, ambientes que o autor conhecia muito bem. Apesar do escândalo, o seu nome já estava definitivamente lançado no meio teatral. A partir de então e até à data da sua morte , obteve inúmeros êxitos de crítica e de público, não só em Portugal, mas também no Brasil. A sua obra dramática, extensa mas desigual em qualidade, situa-se, a nível estético, algures entre a fase final do naturalismo e o período neo-romântico. Marcelino Mesquita cultivou sobretudo o drama histórico, de acordo com o gosto da época, inspirando-se em figuras nacionais e clássicas caracterizadas pela violência passional e por uma existência trágica. É o caso das peças Leonor Teles, O Regente(1897), uma das suas melhores obras, O Sonho da Ìndia(1898), que tem Vasco da Gama como figura central, ou ainda Pedro, o Cruel (1915). No entanto, o autor não se limitou a este género, tendo-se dedicado com igual mestria e sucesso ao teatro de tema contemporâneo nas peças Dor Suprema(1896), Tio Pedro(1902), Almas Doentes(1905), Envelhecer(1909) ou Margarida do Monte(1910), um drama passional neo-romântico. Impôs-se também no género cómico, com a comédia de costumes Peraltas e Sécias(1899), em que ridiculariza a tolice e a frivolidade de certa aristocracia portuguesa de finais do século XVIII.
