Description

A estátua equestre de grande realismo nas proporções e nos pormenores foi executada pelo escultor Alves André, prestigiado escultor do Concelho de Cantanhede, e encontra-se instalada num plinto de dimensões apreciáveis na Praça Marquês de Marialva.

D. António Luís de Menezes, 3º Conde de Cantanhede e 1º Marquês de Marialva, terá nascido no início do século XVI e faleceu em 16 de Agosto de 1675.

Nobre dotado de apurada formação militar, foi um dos mais importantes vultos da Restauração de 1640, tendo-se notabilizado no comando das tropas portuguesas nas batalhas das Linhas de Elvas e Montes Claros, que impediram a entrada dos exércitos castelhanos em território nacional. Os seus feitos militares valeram-lhe o título de Marquês de Marialva, por decreto de 11 de Junho de 1661, e exerceu os cargos de Conselheiro de Estado e de Guerra, Vedor da Fazenda Real, Ministro do Despacho, Governador das Armas de Lisboa, Setúbal, Cascais e Estremadura, e Capitão-General da Província do Alentejo.
