English: Watercolor by Étienne-Éloi Labarre, 1791, representing the so-called Charlemagne's Screen ("Escrain de Charlemagne" in French), a Carolingian goldsmith work donated by Emperor Charles the Bald (823-877) to the Basilica of Saint-Denis (France). It belonged to the Treasure of Saint-Denis until it was seized and destroyed during the French Revolution, in 1794. The Commission temporaire des arts commissioned the architect Étienne-Éloi Labarre to paint the watercolor to document the work before its destruction. The watercolor is kept in the National Library of France (BnF, Estampes et Photographie, Le 38-C-Fol).
The work represented was a masterpiece of Carolingian goldsmithing and was destroyed because of its high value: it was made of gold with seven hundred pearls, two aquamarines, eight rubies, eleven amethysts, twenty-two garnets, one hundred thirty-five emeralds and two hundred and nine sapphires. |
