| Description | Orig. Flickr description: Here we are then, looking down Escolta Street. This street runs parallel to the Pasig River and was once Manila’s premier commercial location. There are also some interesting art deco buildings on that street. Unfortunately, thanks to the many malls that have sprung up all over Manila, everyone talks about Escolta St. in the past tense nowadays. We did not walk onto the street as we were going the other way. Incidentally, a word about the taxi you see approaching. We had been advised by everyone to avoid Manila's ubiquitous white taxis as the drivers are notorious for over charging, hold ups, kidnapping and worse. We were told that the safest taxis to take are these Bangkok style green-yellow cabs which are company run, are safe and reliable. This was the sole green and yellow cab i saw in the entire two days I was in Manila, which probably means that getting one is no easy task. (Manila, Philippines, May 2013) |
