El artista alemán visitó el Perú entre diciembre de 1842 y julio de 1844. Durante su estadía produjo más de tres mil dibujos, acuarelas y óleos. Una de sus obras fue la conocida Escena popular en Lima, en la que retrató el deplorable estado higiénico de las calles de nuestra capital. En el ángulo inferior izquierdo puede apreciarse los desperdicios arrojados a la vía pública y los gallinazos que se comportaban "como aves de corral", cumpliendo la labor de "limpieza" que había descrito algunos años antes el naturalista inglés Charles Darwin. |
