Catalan—L’ALJUB

Un element arquitectónic singular des Mercadal és l’aljub, un gran dipósit que arreplega l’aigua de la pluja que cau sobre la coberta superior o terrassa, i s’emmagatzema a la cisterna interior. L’aljub des Mercadal és obra d’un enginyer militar i va ser començat a construir l’any 1733 per ordre del governador britànic Richard Kane.
Aquest gran dipósit va ser construit perquè les tropes britàniques necessitaven un lloc on proveír-se d’aigua a mig camí entre Maó i Ciutadella. A més, d’aquesta manera també es va proporcionar aigua potable al poble des Mercadal i se’n millorà la qualitat de vida. D’aspecte clos i amb murs atalussats que rodegen la gran cisterna interior, té una capacitat aproximada de 273.000 litres.
Té unes mides extremes de vint metres d'amplada per quaranta de llargada i nou d'alçada.

Un elemento arquitectónico singular de Es Mercadal es el aljibe, un gran depósito que recoge el agua de lluvia que cae sobre la cubierta superior o terraza, y la almacena en la cisterna interior. El aljibe de Es Mercadal es obra de un ingeniero militar y se empezó a construir en el año 1733 por orden del gobernador británico Richard Kane. Este gran depósito se construyó porque las tropas británicas necesitaban un lugar dónde abastecerse de agua a medio camino entre Maó y Ciutadella. Además, con su construcción también se proporcionó agua potable al pueblo de Es Mercadal y se mejoró la calidad de vida de sus habitantes.
De aspecto cerrado y con muros ataluzados que rodean la gran cisterna interior, tiene una capacidad aproximada de 273.000 litros. Sus medidas son de veinte metros de ancho por cuarenta de largo y nueve de altura.

English—THE CISTERN

One of the most special architecture elements that we can find in Mercadal is the cistern, a big water deposit that collects rainwater by means of its large terrace and keeps it in an inside cistern.
The Mercadal’s cistern was the work of a military engineer and its building began in 1733 by orders of the British Governor, Richard Kane. The aim of this large water tank was to provide water to the British troops at a half-way point between Ciutadella and Mao. What’s more, it also provided drinking water to the citizens of Mercadal, giving them a better quality of life. Presenting a solid image with its sloping walls surrounding the huge inside cistern, its has a capacity of 273.000 liters approximately, and it measures 20 meters wide by 40 meters length by 9 meters height.
