Nicholas Ridley, bishop of London, received the earliestpart of his education at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, from whencehe was removed to the universi ty of Cambridge, where hisgreat learning and distinguished abilities, so recommendedhim, that he was made master of Pembroke-hall, in thatuniversity-After being some years in this office, he left Cambridge,and travelled into various parts of Europe for his advance-ment in knowledge. On his return to England, he wasmade chaplain to Henry VIII. and bishop of Rochester,from which he was translated to the see of London byEdward VI. The common schools of this country are sinks of moralpollution and nurseries of hell. Chicago Tablet. When the Catholics here shall be in possession of a con-siderable majority, which will certainly be the case by and by,although the time may be long deferred, then religious libertywill have come to an end in the Republic of the United States. He had been educated in the Roman Catholic religion,but was brought over to the reformed faith by reading Ber-trams book on the Sacrament; and he was confirmed in thesame by frequent conferences with Cranmer and Peter Mar-tyr, so that he became a zealous promoter of the reformeddoctrines and discipline during the reign of king Edward. The following character of this eminent divine presentsso interesting a picture of the good man and pious Chris-tian, that we give it verbatim. In his important offices he so diligently applied himselfby preaching and teaching the true and wholesome doctrineof Christ, that no good child was more singularly loved byhis dear parents, than he by his flock and diocese.
