It is plainfrom the teachings of history that there is a strong tendencyin human nature towards idolatry—idolatrous worship liasever had a strange fascination for man. It was the besettingsin of the church under the Jewish dispensation, and atlast, it so overspread and corrupted it, that the chosenpeople were given over to seventy years captivity for theirpurification. A like apostacy was predicted to come topass under the new dispensation. It is no strange thing inreligion that men should be led by strong delusions, andearnestly believe lies, especially is this to be expectedwhen human tradition is held to have equal authority withthe Word of God. Our only safety is in holding fast torevealed truth as it is written in the Scriptures. The lawof the Lord is perfect, nor do we need any otherinfallibility than that which it furnishes, to guide us inthe way of pleasing God.
