The same presidentattended, as chief guest, a greatly advertised Catholic banquet,and sat silent, and listened to the first toast spoken to thehonor of the Pope of Rome, and the second to the Presidentof the United States. This, as custom and etiquette prevailin diplomatic circles, was a formal notice that Roman Catho-lics hold first allegiance to the Pope of Rome, and then to thePresident of the United States.
