Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Differential weathering and differential erosion are processes involving soft rocks weathering/eroding quickly and hard rocks weathering/eroding slowly. Different portions of an individual rock will weather and erode and different rates, depending on the durability and chemical reactivity of individual components (grains, minerals).

This siltstone sample kinda looks like a fossil, but it's not. Such objects are called "pseudofossils". One of my students asked if this was a trilobite. Unfortunately - no. It's a pseudotrilobite !

Stratigraphic provenance: likely from local Lower Mississippian siliciclastics (Cuyahoga Formation or Logan Formation)

Locality: loose clast atop gravel bar, northern side of the Licking River, just east of Stadden Bridge Road, central Madison Township, east-central Licking County, east-central Ohio, USA (40° 03' 32.7" North latitude, 82° 20' 08.8" West longitude)
