Lëtzebuergesch: Den Ernst Koch. Original caption: " Prof. Dr. E. Koch (1808-1858) -- Dr. ERNST KOCH wurde am 3. Juni 1808 geboren zu Singlis in Niederhessen. Schon im Alter von 17 Jahren besuchte er die Universitäten Marburg und Göttingen; promovierte 1829 als Doktor juris, wirkte 2 Jahre als Privatdozent zu Berlin, trat dann am Ende 1832 als Obergerichtsreferendar in den hessischen Staatsdienst, um bald darauf zum Sekretär des Landtagskommissariates resp. 1832 zum außerordentlichen Referendar am Staatsministerium zu Cassel befördert zu warden. Hier wurde KOCH durch politische Unstimmigkeiten sowohl, als infolge einer gescheiterten Verlobung, das Leben derart verbittert, daß er seine Stellung aufgab und nach Paris reiste, um sich in die Fremdenlegion einreihen zu lassen. Nachdem er von 1833 bis 1836 in Afrka und Spanien an mehreren blutigen Gefechten teilgenommen und 1837 ernstlich erkrankt war, fand er im Hospital zu Pampeluna liebevolle Aufnahme und sorgsame Pflege. Bis dahin Protestant, konvertierte er hier nach erfolgter Genesung zum Katholizismus. Er nahm seinen ehrenvollen Abschied und kehrte in die Heimat zurück, um zeitweilig bei einem Advokaten Hilfsdienste zu leisten. "Im Jahre 1839 mit seinem Gönner, dem damaligen Civilgouverneur HASSENPFLUG nach Luxemburg gekommen, fand KOCH hierselbst eine zweite Heimat, ein seinen Kentnissen angemessenes, segensreiches Wirkungsfeld. Er vermählte sich mit der Tochter des Eigentümers MÜLLENDORF und amtierte bis 1842 als Regierungssekretär, dann bis 1844 als Büreauvorsteher, darauf bis 1846 als Hauptzollamtsrendant; ferner bis 1850 als Redakteur des deutschen Teiles des Memorials, und von da ab bis zu seinem am 24. November 1858 erfolgten frühen Tode als hervorragender Professor der deutschen Sprache am Athenäum. KOCH verstand es, wie keiner vor ihm, bei seinen Schülern wärmste Begeisterung für die Schönheiten der deutschen Literatur wach zu rufen. |
