Summary
[edit]"Looking for the unexpected" , by Erik Pevernagie, oil on canvas,(100 x 80 cm) xxx
When we encounter the unexpected in our lives, we can challenge the battery of our interpretations and loosen our wearying preconceived notions if we keep exploring what we do not know, maintain an open mind, and take a balanced, dispassionate approach to life's vagaries.
When we feel the cards are stacked against us and we have to confront the arresting questions of our walks of life, we may happen to face up to an "apocalypse." When we confront the disclosure of a "new" truth head-on and come to terms with the destruction of our "old" reality, the disparity might be very challenging or conceivably liberating as well.
Some are annoyed by the laming spirit of profound mediocrity and the daily grind. They decide then to go on the road and look for the unexpected.
By discerning the surreptitious features in the scenery of their self, they come to apprehend their personality, find out their identity, and learn how to cultivate it. Taking care of their fingerprints will be an enduring endeavor.
Our "identity" may fascinate us because it ensures continuity throughout time as we discern it from external signs, tuition, or heritage. When inner tensions run out of control, though, it can be that our "character" exceeds all boundaries. If we succeed in mastering the pressure destroying the ramparts of our inner world, we can create a pattern, a new way of living, molding the outlines of our identity, combining the unavoidable daily "musts" with the fluency of the enlightening unsuspected "moments," and allowing us to soar on the flow of the soothing waves of our vibrating feelgood experience.
In our life journey, the unexpected may remind us or surprise us. When we have the impression we recognize something, it can cast us into a spirit of wonderment and procure us a unique feeling. It can surprise us when we discover things that open a new world vision and offer unforeseen involvement.
When looking for the unexpected, we are not only looking for the unexpected in ourselves. We are also curious about the unexpected in others' behavior. To know others, we must learn how and where they differ from us. By understanding this, we can establish an uplifting link with otherness.
Looking for the unexpected assumes an open mind, a condition of dynamic, uncluttered response to current events. By finding out the things we don't know, we analyze our interpretations and master our feelings. We become mindful and assess circumstances in an unbiased manner.
Alexander Von Humboldt left his safe home in Germany and looked for the unexpected in the world at large. He discovered many extraordinary and unusual things that were precious to the coming generations. He combined guts, luck, and creative insight.
The same spirit possesses the 'Burning Man' adherents: looking for the unexpected and thinking out of the box. We will always remember the man looking for a needle in a haystack and came out with the farmer's daughter. In his life, Robert Mapplethorpe has always been "looking for the unexpected, for things he had never seen before."
Phenomenon: Mindfulness and Serendipity
Factual starting point of the picture: Person experimenting with bodily expressions.
