(photo by Kathy Stott) Cerro Calafate is a large hill near El Calafate, Argentina. The slopes have exposures of Tertiary and Cretaceous-aged sedimentary rocks. The very top has outcrops of the Man Aike Formation (Middle Eocene), a siliciclastic succession dominated by sandstone and conglomerate representing deposition in fluvial, estuarine, shoreline, and shallow marine facies. Disconformably below the Eocene rocks are Upper Cretaceous shallow marine to nonmarine deposits - they make up most of the hillside outcrops. They consist of the Calafate Formation over the Chorrillo Formation over the La Irene Formation. The Calafate Formation here is dominated by glauconitic sandstones. The underlying Chorrillo Formation has fluvial deposits from ancient meandering streams. The La Irene Formation below that consists of fluvial deposits from ancient braided streams.
