Summary

[edit]
Description

Eobasileus cornutus Cope, 1872 - fossil mammal skull from the Eocene of Utah, USA. (FMNH P12170, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA)

From museum signage: "With bony knobs on their skulls, uintatheres looked like strange rhinos. Although uintatheres are not closely related to rhinos, the knobs likely served the same purpose as a rhino's horns: attracting mates or establishing dominance among others of their species. Many animals, from dinosaurs to deer, have used fancy structures for similar purposes."

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Placentalia, Dinocerata, Uintatheriidae

Stratigraphy: "Horizon B", Wagonhound Member, Uinta Formation, Upper Eocene

Locality: White River Divide, ~2 miles east of the Bonanza Mine, near Vernal, northeastern Utah, USA
