ENVIRONS OF ORNANS BY GUSTAVE COURBET GUSTAVE COURBET S8—ENVIRONS OF ORNANS A gorge in a limestone country, where awinding stream runs below cliffs and between thesteep escarpments of grass-grown slopes. Sturdytrees have seized a foothold among the masses ofrock and thick woods crown the distant hilltops.Gray ledges of rock crop out among the verdurein the distance and sharply accent the fore-ground. A narrow strip of sky with whiteclouds is seen beyond the hills. Signed at the right, G. Courbet. Height, 2Sy2 inches; length, 35^2 inches. Collection of M. Bernheim, Paris, who purchased it from THE SISTER OF COURBET.

In his right hand he carries aPersian helmet with intricate chasing, and in hisleft, resting against a mass of soft silk draperies,he holds a long gun, inlaid with mother-of-pearl.Near by are scavenging dogs, and in the gloombehind and to the left are seen the figures of bar-gaining natives. To the right is a long vistathrough a crowded street with a sea of white tur-bans and, above, the high facades of native housesand the minaret of a mosque against a bit of bluesky.
