Summary

[edit]
Description

This sobering map was hanging in the Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry Office on the South Rim. It seems so easy to hike into the Canyon, but coming back out is not easy - heat and difficulty to to elevation gain and altitude contribute.

I was very happy hiking here because I was in good condition, spent some time acclimating and we did most of our tough hiking between 6 and 10 AM. Don't be scared - but do be prepared!

The Bright Angel Trail leads the list with 29 fatalities 20 cardiac arrests, 7 heat related, 2 hypothermia
